As the owner of Dapper Dog Grooming Pawlor and a flight attendant with JetBlue, I’ve dealt with my fair share of pups, planes, and pups on planes! Recently, I even became one of those travelers myself when my husband and I flew to Cleveland to pick up Gary, the newest four-legged addition to our home pack. He handled the journey like a champ (with a bit of help from the tips below).
Whether you’re flying cross-country or just a few states over, here are five things I’ve learned to keep in mind when bringing your pup along for the ride:
1. Check Airline Pet Policies Early
Every airline has different rules about traveling with pets. Some allow small dogs in the cabin, others may require them to fly in cargo. Be sure to review your airline’s pet policy for details like weight limits, carrier dimensions, fees, and whether you need to book a pet reservation in advance (most do!). For your convenience, I’ve linked some of the more popular Boston-based airlines’ pet policies, starting with the best, of course. 😉
2. Choose the Right Carrier
FAA and Airline-approved carriers should be soft-sided, well-ventilated, and just large enough for your dog to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. In the weeks leading up to your flight, let your dog get used to the carrier at home with treats and short practice sessions. Here’s the one we used to pick up Gary, who was only 11 lbs on his “gotcha day!”
3. Plan for Bathroom Breaks
Before boarding, make time for a potty break! At Boston Logan Airport, pet relief areas are located in each terminal—look for them post-
security near the gates. There are also designated outdoor relief areas at each terminal’s arrivals level. You can access an interactive map of Logan Airport here, and search for “Pet Relief” to find exactly where to go. Pro tip: bring extra pee pads in your carry-on, just in case there are delays or long layovers.
4. Always Groom After You Fly
Here’s my personal non-negotiable: I always groom my dogs after a flight. As a bit of a germaphobe, I know just how many surfaces they’ve been on (airports and planes aren’t exactly the cleanest places on earth), and the thought of all those travel germs ending up in my bed? No, thank you. Booking a post-trip bath and brush-out means everyone sleeps a little easier.
5. Stay Calm — They’ll Follow Your Lead
Dogs take cues from us. If you’re calm and confident, your pup is more likely to settle in and relax. Bring something familiar, like a favorite toy or blanket, to help soothe them during the flight. And don’t forget treats for positive reinforcement throughout the journey.
Safe travels,
